Stems ascending to erect, 15–25 (–35) cm, glabrous, not glaucous. Leaves basal and cauline, leathery or not, glabrous, sometimes glaucous; basal and proximal cauline 48–110 × 10–18 mm, blade oblanceolate to elliptic, base tapered, margins entire, apex obtuse to acute; cauline 5–8 pairs, petiolate, 30–80 (–120) × 4–18 mm, blade lanceolate to linear, base tapered, apex acute. Thyrses interrupted or continuous, ± secund, 13–48 cm, axis glabrous, verticillasters 6–14, cymes 2–4 (–8) -flowered, 2 per node; proximal bracts lanceolate, 8–50 (–100) × 2–10 (–20) mm; peduncles and pedicels glabrous. Flowers: calyx lobes ovate to obovate, 3–5 × 1.8–3 mm, glabrous; corolla bluish lavender, with reddish purple nectar guides, ventricose, (17–) 21–26 (–30) mm, glabrous externally, sparsely yellow or white-villous internally abaxially, tube 5–8 mm, throat gradually inflated, not constricted at orifice, 6–10 mm diam., rounded abaxially; stamens: longer pair reaching orifice, pollen-sacs divergent, sigmoid, 1.6–2.2 mm, dehiscing incompletely, proximal 1/3 indehiscent, connective not splitting, sides glabrous, sutures denticulate, teeth to 0.1 mm; staminode 12–15 mm, reaching orifice, 0.3–0.5 mm diam., tip straight, distal 4–6 mm densely pilose, hairs golden yellow, to 1.5 mm; style 17–20 mm. Capsules 8–10 × 5–7 mm. 2n = 16.


Phenology: Flowering Jun–Jul.
Habitat: Loose soils, rocky crevices, sagebrush shrublands, pinyon-juniper woodlands.
Elevation: 1600–2500 m.

Discussion

Penstemon pahutensis is known from Inyo County, California, and Esmeralda and Nye counties, Nevada.
