Herbs 1–2.5 (–3.5) dm. Stems usually branched. Leaves linear to lanceolate, sometimes ovate, 1.3–4.1 cm, 0–3 (–5) -lobed, apex narrowly acute to acuminate. Inflorescences 3–8 × 2–5 cm; bracts distally usually red to red-orange or scarlet, 3 (–5) -lobed, apex acute to acuminate. Calyces green, sometimes yellow, with red lobes, sometimes with a yellow band below lobes, 18–25 mm; abaxial and adaxial clefts 13 mm, 50% of calyx length, lateral 5–8 mm, 30% of calyx length; lobe apex acute to obtuse. Corollas 34–41 mm; tube 17–22 mm; beak 14–15 mm. 2n = 48.


Phenology: Flowering Jun–Aug.
Habitat: Dry rocky volcanic slopes, open conifer forests, subalpine.
Elevation: 2100–2800 m.

Discussion

Variety applegatei is restricted to volcanic substrates in the higher elevations of the Cascade Range in south-central Oregon between Crater Lake and Newberry Crater.
